This is my Language Arts Reflection.

This year in Language Arts, I learned many new writing skills. I will use all the new writing skills I learned in Language Arts throughout my life. Can you imagine a world without writers’? It means there would be no more books, television shows, movies, and many more things. You wouldn’t have any of these things because writers think of all these things and publish it to the world.

The piece that I chose to write about was my non-fiction or non-narrative piece. I learned many new skills while publishing this piece. I just really had an “itch” to research about too much homework. I also convinced Mrs. Bubalis to not give her Language Arts class homework for two weeks! One new skill I learned was to make your topic sentences clear. This means that you need to state the claim you are trying to prove. Another skill I learned was you need to organize your piece. You can organize your piece having proof to support your thesis. You can also edit your piece when you are done writing your story. Editing is a large part of your grade! Here is an excerpt of my non-fiction story!

Homework is an awful thing for kids. My opinion is homework is not good for kids because they do not have much time to be just kids. Being a kid means having fun outside. Homework makes kids not be able to do what they want to. A lot of homework after school can cause kids frustration, exhaustion, and a lack of not wanting to play activities. Homework may also make kids lose interest in learning. The frustration of a student can cause the child problems with friends, family, and maybe even teachers.
When a child gets too much homework, it may cause exhaustion. The exhaustion of a child can cause the child little time of sleep. Lack of sleep makes your health not very good. If your health is not very good you start to act strange and many more factors. If your friends don’t like the way you act, you may lose them. When they need to do homework for a long time at night, they will be tired at school.
There is not one kid that believes that homework helps them learn. A school called Sudbury Valley School has been off of homework for thirty-five years! The students proved to the teachers that their homework was too much work and that the homework did not help them learn at all. I can also say that homework really doesn’t help me learn, the teaching in school does because there is more pressure on me to finish. If I get stuck on something, I can just have a teacher help me because my parents don’t know much about my homework. They don’t know much because they hardly learned what we learn today. With my teachers and classmates standing around, I always will have a help. They put pressure on me so I can get my class work done.

When a child comes home from school, they most likely always pull out homework, spending hours and hours of time doing it. If they have a lot of homework, the child may get very nervous, rush to finish, and get a lot of the answers wrong on their homework. You have no excuse of getting answers wrong on your homework. You have as much time as you need to do it!

Homework is a “carrier” for school troubles which leads to family troubles. When a parent helps their child do homework, it leaves them not much time for themselves because homework takes about an hour to two hours. The only interaction parents get with their child and or children is arguments about homework. Arguments about homework with your parents can lead to issues with their friends. Depending on the amount of homework is child has, they may lose family time.

For many children, homework can cause stress and issues of health for your body and your mind. Stress causes lack of sleep, fatigue, slipping grades, unhealthy eating habits, depression, and many more factors. At least eighty percent of students don’t get the recommended amount of sleep and twenty-two percent fall asleep doing homework. If you have an issue with your health, it can cause you to act all different. If you act all different and your friends don’t like it, they may not want to be your friend anymore. If your family doesn’t like it, they may not want to have you around them for a while. Acting different can make your family and friend relationships get smaller and smaller.

All this research and people’s opinions makes me realize that homework is frustrating and exhausting for children. Homework is also bad for children because making kids have less time to be a kid, makes kids not like homework even more. Just having the thought of homework in a child’s brain makes them think of how much homework they have to do when they get home.

I am proud of many things I accomplished in Language Arts. One thing I am proud of is all my finished writing pieces. I am also proud of all my finished projects for Language Arts. One of my projects I am proud of is my FRED project. I am proud of this project because it is one of my best projects I have done this year. I also liked it because you could be very creative with it.

I improved as a writer many ways. One way I have improved was by writing more conversation in my fiction pieces. I have not written many pieces with a lot of conversation throughout my years at Franklin. All of my pieces have just been a lot of narration. Mrs. Bubalis has taught me how to add conversation in my pieces while my piece was already done.

I do not think I have to improve many writing skills. I know I do need to improve two things. One of the things I need to improve is staying on my topic sentence. If you do not stay on your topic sentence, your one paragraph that does not have a clear topic sentence will be all messed up! The second thing I need to improve is taking small moment steps. It is always better to have a shorter story with a lot of detail than having a long story with no detail at all.

To sum it all up, I have improved many writing skills throughout my year in Mrs. Bubalis’s Language Arts class. I have also learned many new writing skills in Language Arts.
